Landscapes

Although I have painted a couple of landscapes, only a few of them have been done in a realistic (or naturalistic) way. In most of them I have used a (pseudo)cubist technique, which is actually rectangular shapes/forms with almost uniform colour on top of each other.

As far as the subject matter is concerned, it has been determined by where I have been living in the last few years, mainly Syros (and previously Corfu). The two paintings for Athens were made during the period of the intensification of the economic crisis. Regarding the two paintings on favelas my main influence was a phrase I had read somewhere (unfortunately I don’t remember the book):

Fences, which have always been a major feature of capitalism and its authoritarian forms, now that poverty and inequalities are gigantic have begun to take the form not of excluding underprivileged areas from the rest of the world, but of “excluding” small areas where the world’s wealth is concentrated from the rest of the world (with fences, security companies and police/military, and so on).

Technically, in most of the paintings I have used acrylic paints (I have used oils for the distant images of Syros and Corfu) while the base is usually cardboard (on canvas are two paintings of the Corfu canons, the Wave and the Island in the Aegean).
